Kratom rules in Louisiana
Louisiana prohibits knowing possession, production, and distribution of kratom under R.S. 40:966.1. Its definition covers leaf-derived substances and substances containing mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragynine. This is not an unrestricted retail state.

Sources and scope
Before buying or traveling
- Check enacted statutes and effective dates. An introduced bill is not a law.
- Check city and county rules at the destination and along your route.
- Distinguish leaf products, extracts, isolated 7-OH, and synthetic compounds; rules may treat them differently.
- A licensed store, product label, or directory entry does not establish that a particular sale or possession is lawful.
State permission does not override federal food and drug requirements. The FDA’s kratom overview explains its position on food, supplements, and medical claims.
