Kratom History: Traditional Use & Modern Products
Kratom has a history of use in Southeast Asia. Modern retail powders, extracts, and isolated compounds should not all be treated as equivalent to traditional leaf use.

Traditional context
Ethnographic accounts describe leaf use in work and social settings. That history helps explain the plant’s cultural context, but it does not establish clinical effectiveness or a universally safe pattern of use.
The modern retail distinction
Product forms and supply chains can change the information a buyer needs. A label invoking traditional use does not establish origin, batch identity, alkaloid composition, or freedom from contamination.
Separate history from current rules
A historical scheduling proposal is not proof of today’s law. Check enacted state rules, effective dates, and federal agency notices. Our FDA timeline distinguishes announcements and enforcement actions from changes to controlled-substance schedules.
