Profile
Traditional medium-ground kava powder is the closest product available outside Vanuatu and Fiji to what you would be served in a native kava ceremony. Made from dried, pounded noble-cultivar root (typically Borogu, Melomelo, or Boroguru from Vanuatu), medium grind requires kneading in cold water inside a straining bag for 8–10 minutes to extract kavalactones.
Best for
Regular drinkers who want the authentic experience and strongest effects per dollar.
How to use
Place 2–4 tablespoons in a nylon straining bag (AluBall, Kava Strainer). Add 8–12 oz cold water. Knead vigorously for 8 minutes. Squeeze bag to express liquid. Drink on empty stomach.
Advantages
- Strongest effects per gram
- Best cost per serving
- Authentic ceremonial experience
- Allows strain selection (Borogu, Melomelo, etc.)
Trade-offs
- Requires preparation equipment and time
- Earthy/bitter taste most acquired
- Can numb mouth aggressively
- Messier than other forms
$25–$60 per 1 lb (30–50 servings)
5–8% kavalactone content by weight
How to buy
Buy from vendors that test each batch for kavalactone content and identify the cultivar. Medium grind is the traditional choice; micronized powder is finer but loses some potency.

Avoid combining kava with alcohol, acetaminophen (Tylenol), or benzodiazepines. Skip if pregnant or nursing. Start with smaller servings than you think you need — reverse tolerance is real.
